Laser Hair Removal

How does laser and other light based hair reduction work?

Laser and other light based hair reductions work by passing through the skin and being absorbed by the pigmented part of the hair follicle underneath the skin. With repeated treatments, the hair growth is permanently reduced. Because pigment in the follicle is needed for effective treatment, gray, blonde, and white hairs unfortunately will not respond to this form of therapy.

Is laser hair reduction safe for me?

At Dermatology and Laser Center of Oklahoma, your safety is our greatest priority. We have two types of lasers to safely treat all varieties of skin color. The Icon Intense Pulse Light (IPL) Platform is used on individuals with fairer complexions, while the Cynergy 1064 nm Yag laser is used on those with darker complexions.

What can I expect during each treatment?

During each treatment, the eyes will be protected with goggles, and cold gel will be applied to the skin. The pulses for hair reduction may sting but should not be painful; if pain is experienced, please let the provider know so the laser lettings can be adjusted.

How long is each treatment?

Treatments of small areas (such as the lip or chin) typically take 5-10 minutes, while larger areas (such as the back) may last up to an hour.

What can I expect after each treatment?

After each treatment, skin will appear pink and may sting. Ice packs are helpful in soothing discomfort. Small scabs may form over the next several days. While hair may appear to be gone initially, they will grow back between treatments; however, with multiple treatments, hair should be finer and less noticeable. Makeup can be applied immediately following treatment if desired.

How many treatments will I need and how often should I have them?

Typically, more treatments lead to better results for hair reduction. A minimum of 3-5 treatments spaced every 6-8 weeks is the suggested regimen. Treatments spaced further apart than this may not achieve maximum improvement.

How should I prepare for my treatments?

The area should be shaved 1-2 days prior to treatment; avoid any method of hair removal that pulls out or dissolves the root of the hair (such as waxing, depilatory creams, or threading) for 4 weeks prior to treatment, as the root must be present for the treatment to be effective. If possible, do not wear makeup or other products on the areas to be treated. If the face is being treated, avoid using alcohol based hair products (gel, mousse, hairspray, etc.) prior to treatment. Avoid sun exposure for 4 weeks before each treatment; if the skin is tan, your treatment may need to be rescheduled for safety purposes.

What is the cost of treatments?

Treatment cost varies depending on the size of the area being treated, and range from $75.00 – 550.00 per treatment. Package discounts of 20% are available when purchasing 5 or more treatments.
