Scars Dermabrasion

What is Dermabrasion?

Dermabrasion is a procedure in which scars are “sanded” to smooth them out. It can be helpful in improving the appearance of some surgical and acne scars. In contrast to microdermabrasion which removes dead skin cells and has no wound, dermabrasion removes the top layer of the skin and creates a raw wound. As the wound heals following dermabrasion, the scars are smoothed and less visible in appearance.

What type of scars respond to Dermabrasion?

Dermabrasion is typically performed to scars on the face. It can be helpful for blending raised or thick surgical scars, as well as pitted acne scars. Because scars vary considerably and numerous treatments are available, a consultation is necessary to determine the best treatment for your particular scar(s).

What should I expect during the procedure?

The area to be treated will be numbed using local anesthetic. If desired, numbing cream can be applied prior to the injections. During the procedure, you will feel pressure as the treated area is smoothed out using a back and forth motion. The duration of the procedure depends on the size of the area treated, but ranges from 15-60 minutes It is okay to drive yourself to and from the procedure.

What should I expect following the procedure?

Immediately following the procedure, the treated skin will be raw (similar to a scraped knee). Healing ointment and bandages will be applied prior to leaving the office. Wound care consists of washing the wounds with soap and water daily, applying healing ointment, and covering with a light bandage for a week. By keeping the wounds covered and moist, postoperative pain is minimal and healing is faster. The area to be treated should be protected from the sun for 4 weeks before and after the procedure. Makeup may be applied once the wound is no longer raw (usually 1 week). There are no limitations on activity following dermabrasion.

How many treatments will I need?

Dermabrasion is usually performed once though additional treatments can be performed if additional improvement is desired.

What is the cost of treatment?

The cost depends on the size of area being treated, but ranges from 400.00 (small scar) to 2400.00 (both cheeks). A consultation is needed to determine the best treatment option and fee for your scar.
