What is “CROSS”?

CROSS stands for “Chemical Reconstruction of Skin Scars”. It is used to treat depressed facial scars, such as acne scars. A chemical is applied to the base of the scar. As the wound heals, new collagen is formed and the scar shrinks in size. CROSS can be used alone or in conjunction with other acne scar treatments. A consultation is necessary to determine the best type of treatment for your particular scars. .

What should I expect during CROSS?

When you arrive, we will have you wash your face with soap and water. You and your doctor will revisit about the treatment plan, and mark out the scars to be treated. Treatment duration depends on the number of scars being treated, but generally ranges from 15-45 minutes. During the procedure, a very small amount of the chemical agent is applied to the base of the scars. Following the application, the area will sting for a few minutes and then subside. Most patients find the stinging very tolerable. You will be awake during the procedure, and you can drive yourself to and from the treatment.

What should I expect after CROSS ?

A small wound will form and develop a scab. The scabs usually fall off after 1 week and leave a red mark, which typically fades over several months. In susceptible individuals, the pink color can darken into a brown discoloration (known as post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation). This can be treated with creams (such hydroquinone). To reduce this risk, it is important to apply sunscreen daily to the dry scabs. Makeup (if desired) may be applied as well to the dry scabbed areas.

How many treatments will I needed?

2-4 treatments are often needed.

How often can the treatments be performed?

CROSS treatments are spaced every 4-6 weeks apart.

What is the cost of CROSS?

Fees vary depending on the number of scars being treated, but ranges from $400.00 to $800.00 per treatment for most patients. A treatment plan will be discussed at your consultation, and will be tailored to your individual scars.
